Position Summary:

Standardized Participants (SP) serve as trained individuals who portray patients, family members, caregivers, or other healthcare-related roles in educational and assessment activities for medical students and other healthcare professionals. Standardized Participants provide consistent, realistic, and structured interactions that allow learners to develop and demonstrate skills required for their respective clinical fields. Successful candidates must be reliable, professional, comfortable interacting with learners, able to memorize and consistently portray cases, and be committed to maintaining confidentiality while providing a realistic educational experience.

Job Duties:

·      Accurately portray cases in a professional, consistent, and realistic manner.
·      Accurately represent the physical, emotional, and social characteristics described in assigned case materials.
·      Memorize and consistently provide assigned scenario details such as medical history, symptoms, personal information, and other case details.
·      Maintains consistency across multiple learner sessions and encounters.
·      Maintain confidentiality and appropriate boundaries with learners and simulation center personnel.
·      Provide structured and objective feedback to the learners when specifically trained and assigned to do so.
·      Respond appropriately, realistically, and professionally during student interactions.
·      Maintain cultural intelligence and empathy with the ability to engage respectfully with individuals from varying cultural backgrounds.
·      Communicate learner performance concerns with the Simulation Center Manager, Chief of Simulation, or faculty as appropriate.
·      Attend required orientation, case trainings, and rehearsals as assigned.
·      Must be able to read, write and communicate fluently in English.
·      Demonstrate competency in portraying assigned cases before participating in learner activity.

Working Conditions:
·      Students will perform non-invasive physical exams on Standardized Participants that will require SPs to change into examination gowns. These physical exams may include listening to heart, lung, and abdominal sounds with a stethoscope, pressing on the abdomen, attaching electrocardiogram leads, examining extremities, etc.
·      Standardized Participants will primarily be based in a simulated clinical setting; however, they may be occasionally asked to provide a simulation experience outside of a clinical setting such as in a hallway or outside the building to increase physical fidelity.

 

Minimum Qualifications:
·      High School Diploma or GED ($20/hr)
·      This position requires reliability, professionalism, and confidentiality due to working in a high-stakes testing environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
·      High School Diploma or GED + Healthcare Certification/License and/or 1 or more years of Standardized Participant Experience or Live Acting Experience ($22/hr)
·      Associate’s degree from an accredited institution ($24/hr)
·      Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution ($25/hr)
·      Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution + Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS) or Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) ($26/hr)
