THE STORY:
A CHRISTMAS STORY is humorist Jean Shepherd’s memoir of growing up in the mid-west of the 1940s and
follows the quest of 9-year-old Ralphie Parker to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas. Ralphie pleads his case before his mother, his teacher and even Santa Claus himself, at Goldblatt’s Department Store and gets the consistent response: “You’ll shoot your eye out.” All the elements from the beloved motion picture are here, including the family’s temperamental exploding furnace; Scut Farkas, the school bully; the boy’s experiment with a wet tongue on a cold lamppost; the Little Orphan Annie decoder pin; Ralphie’s father winning a lamp shaped like a woman’s leg in a net stocking; Ralphie’s fantasy scenarios and more.

SEEKING:
RALPH (Ralphie as an adult) – Male, 40s — 70s. A storyteller, reminiscing about his youth, he narrates the joys, the trials, and the tribulations of young Ralphie. He also plays many other characters throughout the play. A pleasant “everyman” that everyone can relate to as he tells us his story.
RALPHIE PARKER – Male, 9 – 13. While ostensibly age 9, can be older but must read as a young boy, well before puberty hits. Engaging, friendly and utterly determined to get his prize: a genuine Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas.
MOTHER – Female 30s – 50s. Ralphie’s mother, kind, harried, resilient and capable – in short, the best mother in the world for a young boy growing up in the mid-west of the 1940s
THE OLD MAN – Male, 30s – 50s. Ralphie’s father, irascible yet approachable, a lovable grump
RANDY PARKER – Male, 6 — 10, Ralphie’s little brother
MISS SHIELDS – Female, 30s – 50s. Ralphie’s teacher
FLICK – Male, 9 – 13. Ralphie’s friend and classmate
SCHWARTZ – Male, 9 – 13. Ralphie’s friend and classmate
ESTHER JANE ALBERRY — Female, 9 — 13. Ralphie’s classmate, has a bit of a crush on Ralphie.
HELEN WEATHERS — Female, 9 — 13. Ralphie’s classmate and Esther Jane’s best friend
SCUT FARKAS — Male, 9 — 14. A bully who terrorizes Ralphie, his brother and every one of his friends
