Job Description:
Empathy Theatre Project is seeking a talented and experienced Set Designer & Builder for our upcoming production of “We’re Still Here” running from January 24 to February 9, 2025. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the complete design and construction of the set, working closely with the director to ensure the final product aligns with the artistic vision of the production.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design Collaboration: Work closely with the director to understand and interpret the artistic vision for the production. Develop set design concepts that align with the director’s vision while considering practical aspects of construction and staging.
- Design Development: Create detailed set design drawings and renderings. Present designs to the director and make revisions as needed based on feedback.
- Construction: Build the set based on approved designs. Utilize your own workshop and tools for construction. Ensure that all elements are safe, functional, and visually appealing.
- Transport: Arrange for transportation of set components to and from the theater. Ensure that all set pieces are delivered on time for the load-in and are correctly set up for rehearsals and performances.
- Load-In & Setup: Coordinate and oversee the set load-in on January 13, 2025. Ensure the set is installed correctly and ready for the first rehearsal.
- Maintenance: Address any set issues that arise during the production run, including repairs or adjustments.
- Strike: Oversee and execute the dismantling and removal of the set after the final performance on February 9, 2025.
Requirements:
- Proven experience as a set designer and builder in theater or similar production environments.
- Strong portfolio demonstrating a range of design and construction skills.
- Ability to work independently with your own workshop, tools, and means of transportation.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills to effectively work with directors and other production staff.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work within deadlines and manage time effectively.
Compensation:
The position offers a flat rate of $2500, which includes compensation for both design and construction, as well as materials. This does not cover any additional costs for your own workshop, tools, or transportation. ETP does already own a bunch of wood from previous sets that you are welcome and encouraged to use.
