Empathy Theatre Project announces auditions for our upcoming production of “We’re Still Here,” a new musical co-authored by Mesquakie Tribal Elder Alex Walker Jr. and Playwright and Composer Cordelia Zars. Inspired by true events at Oak Flat, Arizona, this is a powerful and thought-provoking musical about cultural preservation, Indigenous rights, and rural poverty in America. After a sold-out workshop performance of “We’re Still Here” in 2023, our team is producing it on a bigger stage in early 2025.

AUDITION DATES: October 12 & 13, 19 & 20, 2024. Auditions are held in downtown Boulder at the First United Methodist Church.
REHEARSAL DATES: We rehearse in Boulder for 8 weeks, Tuesday-Thursday evenings and Saturday afternoons to accommodate work schedules.
SHOW DATES: January 24th – February 9th, 2025 at the Dairy Arts Center in Boulder.
COMPENSATION: Primary Lead roles will be paid $1400; Supporting Leads $1100-1200. Ensemble roles will be paid $200-$300, depending on role size.

We are actively seeking Indigenous actors and singers to join our cast, and welcome new or inexperienced performers to audition. The Indigenous characters and stories in “We’re Still Here” are derived from co-author Alex’s lived experience as a Mesquakie tribal elder, his children and grandchildren. They are also based on real interviews from students, activists, and elders fighting to save Oak Flat. We invite Indigenous and Indigenous-identifying actors to audition for these roles, inclusive of mixed-race, First Nations, Central and South American heritage. Your talent, passion, and unique perspective are invaluable contributions to the storytelling process.
