Elemental Theatre Company announces auditions for The Turn of the Screw, adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher from the story by Henry James, and directed by Jeamus Wilkes. Grounded in James’ classic and provocative tale of suspense, horror, and repressed sexuality, Hatcher’s stage version gives yet another turn of its own: A young governess journeys to a lonely English manor house to care for two recently orphaned children, but she is not their first governess. Her predecessor, Miss Jessel, drowned herself when she became pregnant by the sadistic valet, Peter Quint, who was himself found dead soon after and under mysterious circumstances. Now the new governess has begun to see the specters of Quint and Jessel haunting the children, and she must find a way to stop the fiends before it is too late. But one frightening question tortures the would-be heroine: Are the ghosts real, or are they the product of her own fevered imagination?

Bring your
– Headshot and acting resume
– A prepared list of any conflicts up through October 11th, 2026

You cannot have schedule conflicts on performance days. Headshots and resumes can also be emailed in advance to jeamuswilkes@gmail.com. Please have a cover letter, and a subject header of “TotS Auditions ETC (Your Name Here in These Fancy Parentheses)”.

Prepare with a memorized dramatic monologue. Go big. A strong preference is given for a British RP accent. Monologues should be approximately one minute in length (but no Shakespeare. The Bard is awesome, it’s just not appropriate for this audition). You may also be asked to read from the script. Printed versions of sides will be provided at the audition (no need to memorize, so sides will not be emailed in advance). If you cannot attend in-person auditions but would still like to be considered, you may email a cover letter, headshot & resume, and link to a self-taped audition video (or attach a compressed video file) to jeamuswilkes@gmail.com. The deadline for submitting video auditions is 8/2/26, 6:00 pm. Please know that a strong preference will be given to those auditioning in person.

PAYMENT
Actors (both leads and understudies) will receive a stipend of $200.00, payable within two weeks after the end of the show’s run.
