It’s the 1950s and Mrs. Ethel Savage, the heir of a substantial 10-million-dollar inheritance from her late husband, wishes to use this wealth with thoughtfulness. However, her adult stepchildren, driven by their own selfish motives, relentlessly seek to gain control over it. Thankfully, the funds are securely invested in negotiable securities, beyond their reach. Frustrated by their inability to lay claim to the fortune, her stepchildren resort to a drastic measure by forcibly committing her to a sanatorium, naively hoping that such an action will restore her to a more cooperative state of mind.

Within the walls of the Cloisters, the sanatorium, Mrs. Savage encounters an eclectic assemblage of societal outcasts, individuals who grapple with an inherent inability to conform to the norms of everyday existence. These remarkable men and women yearn for the assistance that only Mrs. Savage, in her unique position, can offer.

While there are many farcical and slap-stick-worthy moments, there are also moments of tenderness in the play such as when Mrs. Savage helps Fairy May, a humorously innocent character who just wants to be loved, discover that love is hidden all around. Or when Jeff connects with Mrs. Savage over his previous career as a musician, and hers as a former playwright, they bond over their shared love of the arts and help each other to see the beauty in themselves. The characters in The Curious Savage are all unique and quirky. They are often funny, but are also capable of great kindness and compassion. The play shows that friendship and love can look different for everyone, and that it is possible to find love in unexpected places.
