Message from the Board President of the Colorado Theatre Guild:

Dear Colorado Theatre Community,

I want to apologize for the snafus that have taken place with the Henry Award nominations over the last few days. I appreciate you all taking time to share your concerns because it is an indication of your deep and sincere care about this theatre community. It is important that we receive this feedback, and I thank you for that.

To honor your concerns, here is what we have done and will do:

We will make sure that communication regarding the Henry Awards (email lists, social media platforms, and our website) will be better coordinated moving forward. This means that no matter your access point, you’ll get the same information released at the same time.

All nominees that were released are back on the list. Our deepest apologies for the accidental removal of two nominees.

Some nominees that were placed in one area are now in their proper category; a play was submitted as a musical when it was meant to be classified as a play. In another instance, an actor was mistakenly attributed to “Choir Boy” but was actually in “Guadalupe in the Guest Room” instead.

None of these errors were intentional. Once we were aware of the errors, we worked to fix them. Obviously, this process wasn’t as smooth as we wanted. For that, I wholeheartedly apologize. I don’t have the honor of tabulating, but when an error happens on your watch, leadership says, “Own it. Take responsibility and do your best to move forward, not making the same mistake in the future.” This, of course, does not minimize any harm that has been caused. If I had a time machine, I assure you I’d go back to fix it so no harm could be caused. As I don’t have one, I can only hope you will take my apology to heart. You matter. This theatre community matters. We will do better right now and as we go forward.

16th Annual Celebration Honors Outstanding Achievements of Colorado’s Theatre Community

The Colorado Theatre Guild’s 16th Annual Henry Awards will take place the evening of Monday, July 25, 2022, at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities beginning at 7:00 PM. There are in-person and streaming options for attendance, and there will be catered heavy hors d’oeuvres after the show. Tickets are on sale at  https://arvadacenter.org/events/16th-annual-henry-awards or by calling the box office at 720-898-7200

Several changes have been instituted this year:

Previously, only the technical categories of costume, lighting, scenic, and sound design were separated between Tier I (budgets $500K and above) and Tier II (budgets below $500K). This year, and moving forward, the acting categories will also be separated into Tier 1 and Tier 2. We are introducing award categories for Youth Performers under 18 years of age. The categories of Outstanding Music Direction and Choreography are not exclusive to a musical.

Before COVID, we typically had approximately 200 shows in each Henry season. In the 2021-22 season, there were 140 shows. There are five nominees per category unless there is a tie. We implemented an automated process for tabulating results. Oversight was provided by three individuals–one from the Henry’s Committee, one from the CTG Board, and one from the Community.

None of the three individuals are affiliated with any Colorado theatre company.

“Few people have had as much impact on theater in Denver — or the lives of theater people in Denver — as Henry Lowenstein, who ran Denver Post publisher Helen Bonfils’ crown jewel on East Colfax and Elizabeth Street until the theater closed in 1986. He discovered new talent. He launched careers. He encouraged women and people of color. For hundreds of thousands of Coloradans, the Bonfils served as their first experience in live theater.” – John Moore | Oct 07, 2014

Established in 2006, the Henry Awards honor outstanding achievements during the past season and serve as one of the Colorado Theatre Guild’s annual fundraising events. The awards are named for longtime local theatre producer Henry Lowenstein. Nominations are determined through a judging process conducted by more than 100 statewide peer professionals, academics/ educators, and theatre aficionados.
